Hodges in outstanding form at Herefordshire

KEN Hodges turned in an outstanding round of 81-16-65 in testing conditions to win the latest Herefordshire Seniors medal competition.

All of the best scores came in the 0-16 low handicap division with Bren Standell, 77-10-67, taking second and Bryan Matthews, 75-7-68, third.

The best score in the 17-28 came from Nigel Yarwood with 93-20-73, followed by Jim Smith on 94-19 -75 and Roger Wardle with 98-20-78.

In a rain-affected home match, Herefordshire Seniors drew 3-3 with Rolls of Monmouth.

q Shropshire and Herefordshire Seniors have successfully defended their Midlands Seniors Team Championship with a single-shot success against Worcestershire at Robin Hood.

The county seniors have now qualified for the English Seniors County Finals Championship at Trentham in October.

That victory was the culmination of a highly successful August which has seen three successes.

The Seniors defeated North Wales Counties 11½-6½ at Wrexham and followed this up with a 7½-2½ victory over S&H Golf Club Captains at Hill Valley.

The third in their trio of wins was an 8-5 success against the County Senior Ladies at Henlle Park.

q Leominster retained their commanding lead over Herefordshire in the annual friendly for the Morgan/Powell Cup.

The match is played with a four ball better ball Stableford format with all scores included for a total aggregate score.

Leominster, captained by Ray Powell, defeated Herefordshire, under the leadership of vice-captain Mark Bloxham by 274-248.

The North Herefordshire club now lead 9-6 after 15 years of the competition.

q Andy Preece was the winner of the George Fairbrother Cup at Burghill Valley.

His score of plus four in the bogey/par competition pipped Aaron Price by one.

Result: 1 Andy Preece +4, 2 Aaron Price +3, 3 Bill Lockhart +2, 4 Steve Bloise +1.

q Charles McInnes took first place in Division 1 of the Burghill Valley Seniors Stableford with 38 points, edging out Bob Dixon by a point with Les Herbert a further point back in third.

In Division 2, Brian McDonnell took the honours with 36 points, leaving Arney Morley (34) in second place with Barry Watkins in third with 32.

q Luctonians’ Am/Am at Kington produced an excellent day of golf from a large field of players.

Top prize went to David Price and his son James, Adam Herbert and Malcolm Sosna for their score of 100 points.

Donovan Tomkins, Chris Jones, Adrian Burton and Jerry Street were second with 94, the same score as Spike Powell, Steve Mifflin, Chris Crook and Simon Hussey who finished third while Dave Price, Andy Moore, Greg Powell and Adrian Hope were fourth with 92.

The yellow-ball competition was won by Richard Green, J Wilde, M Green and J Williams with 35 points from the quartet of Dudley Cleland, Ray Amos, A Goosan and J Meredith who finished with 34.

q Guy Roberts’ tally of 35 points won him the day at The Three Counties’ Golf Society’s penultimate get-together of the season at Worcester Golf & Country Club.

Alex Quinn (34) took second place on countback from Ben Lloyd.

Michael Owens was nearest the pin with Phil Sayce taking the longest-drive prize.

Best guest was Will Lloyd who shot a superb 72 gross to score 40 points.
