HEREFORDSHIRE has a wealth of market towns. Here, Peter Manders has captured early morning local shoppers approaching the Friday Market in Corn Square and the sunrise highlighting one of Leominster’s distinctive buildings in Victoria Street. Barber and Manuel, which is viewed from the doorway of the old post office in Corn Square, was itself once a post office before becoming a delicatessen in 1947. The shop frontage has barely changed since 1905 when Kelly’s Directory listed the building as a post office, naming the Postmaster at that time as William Henry Powell.
While retaining the original features, Barber and Manuel has recently undergone renovations including preparations for a coffee shop and a restaurant above it. Leominster has a lot to offer the visitor including many specialist shops, fine art auctioneers, eateries, supermarkets and pubs. The town dates from the seventh century and its history can be seen throughout, retaining medieval and Tudor characteristics, narrow streets and timber framing. Antique shops are the town's specialty. There is also a Farmers’ Market on the second Saturday in each month from 9am to 1pm.
